Proposal for CUAHSI Supported Training Workshop
As a part of serving the water science community, CUAHSI supports training workshops and field schools. Workshops may be either virtual or in-person events. The workshops cover topics not widely available in universities, are frequently taught by a team of scientists from multiple institutions, and align with our mission to support the multidisciplinary study of water. CUAHSI provides event planning support, which includes collection of registration fees, assistance with selection of workshop venues, publicity, and execution of necessary contracts. CUAHSI additionally underwrites the workshop to remove any financial liability from the class instructors.

In most cases, registration fees cover nearly the full cost of the workshop and CUAHSI has limited funds available to subsidize these events. Instructors are typically not compensated for developing the workshop, although honoraria can be paid to support staff that help with the event.

Instructors are responsible for providing instruction and curriculum for the workshop, including robust safety training. Instructors and CUAHSI will ensure that participants adhere to safety guidelines during the course.

CUAHSI seeks to make all events welcoming and inclusive and expects that all participants and instructors follow the CUAHSI Code of Conduct. Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

Proposal Procedure

Proposals will be evaluated by CUAHSI Leadership with the following criteria:
- Will the workshop attract a national to international audience because of its significance, uniqueness, or other attributes?
- Do the workshop instructors provide a distinctive perspective on the workshop topic, as well as being experts in their field?
- Are learning objectives clearly stated and achievable within the proposed structure of the workshop?
- Does the workshop structure allow for active learning through discussion, problem sets, or other activities?
- Does this workshop present a unique learning opportunity that is not generally available at most universities?
- Does the workshop incorporate the use of CUAHSI’s Water Data Services?
For accepted proposals, CUAHSI staff will work with the workshop organizer to develop a budget (which determines the registration fee), pick a venue, and determine the dates for the workshop offering. Generally, workshops will be held between March 2023 and February 2024. Proposals will be reviewed in late November.

CUAHSI can support
- Running Python and R code in the cloud using CUAHSI JupyterHub (see jupyterhub.cuahsi.org for more information). This environment can be customized to meet the needs of your workshop.
- Running MATLAB code in the cloud using MATLAB Online (see matlab.cuahsi.org for more information).
- Provisioning custom cloud-computing solutions for running complex hydrologic models and data intensive analysis.
CUAHSI’s HydroShare offers opportunities for participants to archive and share data, and provides a link between data stored in HydroShare and JupyterHub.
